At the beginning of the school year, fourth-grade classes brainstormed goals they had for using Spanish. We have been using common themes from this list of goals to develop new units of study about playing sports (specifically soccer, an extremely popular sport in most Spanish-speaking cultures) and about food. In each of these units, students have been acting out class stories and writing text as a class to go with the photos we take during the stories. After creating a story, students draw the main events while listening to a retelling of the story, and then practice their writing independently by adding a caption for each of the pictures.
